For children under age 6, lead poisoning is the single largest environmental health threat. Each year, children living in old, shabby homes swallow lead paint chips (that have fallen or peeled from the walls) or inhale lead dust. Ingestion of this toxin can lead to brain injury, mental retardation, behavioral problems, learning disabilities, and in severe cases, coma and death.
